As you go shopping, you may wonder what the buzz is around fast and sustainable fashion. The two means of creating clothes are vastly different, and both merit their own pros and cons. Ultimately, sustainable fashion is better for the environment and for the people who make it.
Fast fashion allows retailers to make clothing quickly in order to keep up with changing fashion trends. Companies that use fast fashion include Forever 21 and HM. Fast fashion producers often do not use fair labor, meaning the employees making the clothing are most likely not getting paid well for their efforts. The environment they work in may be unsafe as well. Sustainable clothing may be more expensive to produce and purchase, but the outcome is much better for the environment and for the peace of mind of the customer. Sustainable clothing uses materials that are not harmful to the planet, and the ethics behind the process are sound because of fair trade work. Employees who make ethical and sustainable clothing are paid well and work safely, which is a reason why sustainable clothing is more expensive. Sustainable clothing lasts longer than fast fashion. Because of the materials used in fast fashion, the clothing is not likely to be very good quality. This means the clothing is likely to rip or fade in a short amount of time, which then merits the need to buy more clothing. Sustainable clothing uses stronger materials, so the cost of paying for sustainable clothing is better in the long run because of the extended use a customer can get out of purchasing sustainable clothing. When you go shopping next time, take the time to learn what kind of clothing you are buying. If it is fast fashion, you may want to think again!
